Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone
In December of this year, Finland will host a conference in Helsinki on behalf of the United Nations, with the goal of making progress towards a WMD-free zone in the Middle East. The initiative is led by Finnish Minister Jaakko Laajava who has called for civil society input to the conference.
In May this year Jaakko Laajava stated that 'intensified efforts are needed' to ensure the event gets off the ground. In response MPs have tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM 273) urging the UK government to do its utmost to ensure a conference takes place in 2012 and is attended and supported by all states in the region.
